Flood risk homes 'may get insurance'
A year on from the summer floods that devastated many parts of Britain and new research from moneysupermarket.com has revealed that there are still competitive home insurance policies available to homeowners in flood risk areas.

Comparing premiums from June 2007 to June 2008 for Tewkesbury – a high-risk flood area, the price comparison website found that homeowners who have not claimed for flooding are still able to get competitive insurance premiums.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It has been a year since floods hit homes in Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and other parts of the UK. Those living in high risk areas can take some reassurance from our research.

"It is not all bad news - even if a claim has been made for flood damage, and only a handful of insurers will provide a quote - premiums remain incredibly competitive, highlighting the benefit of shopping around for your cover."

Calls have been made to the government for the provision of improved flood defences across the UK, but without this, Mr Gerrard warned that insurers may begin to increase their premiums in certain areas.

Last month, moneysupermarket.com offered other home insurance advice, urging cyclists to ensure their bikes are covered by their home contents insurance or risk having to pay out in the event that they are damaged or stolen.
