Safe drivers could face premium increases

Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, claims the legislation could mean younger drivers, who the industry views as high-risk, could get lower cover costs and insurers may pass the extra cost on to safer motorists.
Research by the company found novice drivers make up seven per cent of the car insurance market but pay 22 per cent of all premiums and they pay on average £989 for comprehensive cover, compared the average which is £459.
Mr Berkhauer believes other motorists will pay should the legislation force insurers to lower prices for high-risk drivers.
"If the Bill calls for pricing to be equal across age groups this could lead to a rise in premiums for lower risk, safer drivers, who would effectively be subsidising their higher risk counterparts," he said.
Recent research by Confused.com found young people face significant increases in the cost of their insurance cover if they incur points on their driving licences.
