Ministers agree over disqualified drivers

Ministers agree over disqualified drivers
An agreement has been reached by British, Ireland and Northern Ireland ministers to keep disqualified motorists off the road, which could affect car insurance costs.

The agreement means UK motorists convicted of an offence in Ireland can no longer escape the punishment when they return home, which could have an impact on the cost of their cover.

Jim Fitzpatrick, British road safety minister, claims the move will make the roads safer.

"This pioneering agreement will make our roads safer by ensuring disqualified drivers are not able to escape their punishment and so keep dangerous drivers off our roads," he said.

Should the plan be successful, it could reduce the number of accidents caused and keep law-breaking motorists from using the roads, which could help reduce the cost of car insurance for safe drivers.

A report in 2007 by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety found 40,000 young motorists who had been disqualified from driving under the New Drivers Act were still using their vehicles unlicensed and uninsured.
