New camera could reduce accidents

New camera could reduce accidents
Vauxhall claims its new in-car technology will improve road safety, reduce stress and prevent speeding tickets, which could have an effect on car insurance.

The new systems, known as Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning, can read speed limit and no-overtaking signs and display them on the instrument panel, Motors Today reports.

In addition, the technology can alert drivers as to when they accidentally veer out of their lane using a dual-function camera.

Hans Demant, managing director of General Motors Europe Engineering, told the website the new equipment will provide drivers with information without interfering with the car's movements.

"These new features follow Vauxhall's philosophy of enhancing driving excitement by assisting drivers without reducing their level of control," he said.

Should the company's claims be true, consumers who choose to buy one may find the cost of insurance affected by the safety technology.

Volvo's new City Safety system recently won the top prize in the technology category at the Fleet World honours in London.
