Check tyres warns industry figure
Car Insurance News - Published: 18/06/2008

New research by Cooper Tire Europe found 95 per cent of vehicles on the road have at least one tyre which is under inflated by ten per cent which the company claims increases the chances of the driver being involved in an accident.
The firm claims stopping distances involving defective tyres also increase and data from the Department of Transport reveals poor quality rubber is responsible for 1,000 injuries and fatalities each year.
Malcolm Jones, Cooper Tire product manager, believes checking tyres is a mundane task but one which could save consumers money and make the roads safer.
"As the credit crunch grips the country, it's amazing that drivers aren't bothering to do it, as it could save them money and, more importantly, keep them safe on the road," he said.
Safer Motoring claims motorists caught by the authorities with sub-standard tyres could face a fine of £2,500 and three penalty points, which can lead to higher insurance costs also.
