Police charge 40 over insurance fraud
More than 40 people have been charged by police in connection with car insurance fraud in the Luton area.

Those accused are said to have taken part in a £5.3 million "crash for cash" scam whereby they made false insurance claims to companies following staged car crashes.

Following a joint two-year investigation by the Bedfordshire police and the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), known as Operation Exhort, charges have now been brought against people allegedly involved.

Around 26 people are due in court over the next two days to face charges of conspiracy to defraud and obtaining, or attempting to obtain, a money transfer by deception, among other accusations.

The remaining 14 people are due before Luton magistrates on July 24th.

According to figures from the IFB, Blackburn, Bradford and Birmingham are among the worst places in the UK for staged motor accidents and Richard Davies, the bureau's deputy director, told This is Lancashire the practice costs the industry around £4 million a week.
