Image could mean higher insurance costs, says survey
New research has found one-third of people in the UK are influenced by other people's opinions of them and as such spend money on expensive cars, which could mean higher car insurance costs.

According to a survey by Experian, men are twice as likely as women to get into debt by buying a car to live up to a wealthy image.

Expensive motors such as BMWs, Mercedes and Audis could cost more to insure depending on factors such as age and location as they are prestigious, fast and desirable.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director at the company's Automotive division believes the credit crunch has impacted on many people's lives but the desire for top brand name cars remains high.

"This survey highlights the fact that the consumer's desire for a car that projects the right image remains as strong as ever, however, increasing debt leads to an increased risk of fraud," he said.

According to research from uSwitch.com, the cost of running a car, which includes insurance cover, could soon outstrip the value of the vehicle.
