Neil Greig, director of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) claims even a minor bump could result in consumers paying significant amounts of money for the damage.
He says because a lot of drivers are not aware of the large excess on their policy they could end up with a bill if the car is not returned to the lender in the same condition as when it left.
"The collision damage waiver and the insurance are the key issues, in the hopefully unlikely event of an accident you want to be sure that you are not ending up with a huge bill just for a minor bump," Mr Greig said.
According to Which? many motorists are unaware of the exclusions on car hire policies, which may include the wheels, tyres, roof, windscreen and undercarriage.
