More skid-resistance needed on A roads
A new report has found a quarter of A roads in England may be in need of skid-resistance maintenance in order to make them safer, which could result in fewer accidents and lower car insurance premiums.

The Department for Transport revealed in a report the problem is worse in London, where 48 per cent are in need of attention, Motors Today reports.

Overall, the research found the amount of money spent by local authorities on road improvements in 2006/07 fell compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile the condition of unclassified roads in built-up areas deteriorated and expenditure on them fell to £1.7 billion, the first real-term decrease in ten years.

Around £986 million was spent on maintaining truck roads in England in 2006 and 2007, the magazine reports.

According to its website, the Department of Transport aims to deliver a transport system which balances the needs of the society, environment and the economy.
