Car buyers 'are creatures of habit'

Car buyers 'are creatures of habit'
Alistair Darling's recent Budget - which includes a number of automotive tax rises - will not prompt people to change their car buying habits, according to a new survey.

Carried out by carmagazine.co.uk, the research revealed that a charge of £950 would not deter them from purchasing cars that produce high levels of carbon dioxide emissions.

Mr Darling announced in the Budget that cars that produce in excess of 255g/km of CO2 would qualify for the charge.

Tim Pollard, the editor of the online magazine, states: "Most motorists believe that if they can afford to buy an expensive car, a £950 bill is a minor inconvenience. That suggests this is a revenue raising scam by the government, rather than an exercise to change motorists' behaviour."

In related news, former government minister Stephen Ladyman has said today that the prime minister should cut fuel duties and "strike a new deal with the motoring public".
