Speaking to the Telegraph, Mr Bishop said that people should check their home insurance policy to establish if they are covered for personal or legal liability.
"If the decoration of a room in your house is partially completed and/or in a dangerous condition, you should either stop visitors from entering the room in question or warn them of any hazards," he told the newspaper.
Peter Gerrard, the head of insurance at price comparison service moneysupermarket.com, echoed this view.
Also speaking to the Telegraph, Mr Gerrard stated that as summer approaches and people hold more barbecues and parties, they should ensure they have liability cover.
In related news, the British Insurance Brokers' Association advised consumers to use insurance brokers to help them to decipher increasingly complex home insurance options.
