DIY enthusiasts should report changes to insurer
People with home and contents insurance have been told that they must inform their insurance company after making alterations to their homes, no matter how small they may be.

The warning came from Debra Williams, managing director of comparison site Confused.com, who believes that insurers may refuse to pay out on a claim should the state of the property be different from what was originally insured.

She told the Telegraph the cost of insurance premiums would more than likely increase, however it was worth it to ensure that the house is protected against any damage.

"Adding an en-suite to your bedroom would be considered an extra room - as you would have already informed your insurer about the number of rooms your property has, not telling them about the change would give them grounds to refuse a payout," she said.

Confused.com recently advised consumers to check what is covered by their policies every year.
