Tampering with gas or electricity could void home insurance

Tampering with gas or electricity could void home insurance
Home owners are being warned that making alterations to boilers should be left to properly qualified individuals otherwise a home insurance claim could be void.

Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), said that should the alterations go wrong, insurance companies may refuse to pay out for any damage to the property as a result.

He advised those who believe alterations are needed to employ someone with authority to carry out the work.

"If it's proven that you have been tampering with your gas or electricity supply then it would definitely affect your claim to an insurance company. Most certainly boilers should be left because boilers are restricted by the CORGI [Council for Registered Gas Installers] arrangement," he said.

Mr Leech also highlighted the physical dangers of DIY, with people suffering injuries from falling off ladders or cutting themselves.

The NHIC represents companies that work in the home improvement sector.
