Government plans to cut accidents by introducing residential speed limits
The government is planning on introducing 20 mph speed limits on residential roads in a bid to cut the number of accidents, which could also affect car insurance costs.

Digital signs are to be employed to enforce variable limits near schools, which will fall to 20 mph or less when children are attending or departing from school, the Times reports.

The road safety minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, told the newspaper that accidents could be reduced by the new measures.

"We could reduce crashes still further, with the help of more 20mph zones, especially in residential neighbourhoods and other areas where there are vulnerable road users," he said.

If the measures are implemented and road traffic accidents are subsequently reduced, it could have an affect on the cost of car insurance premiums as fewer collisions could mean fewer claims.

Mr Fitzpatrick took up his position in 2007 and is responsible for the government's efforts to improve the safety of UK roads.
