Practice with supervision is encouraged
Parents have been told that giving their children supervised practice in addition to them receiving formal driving lessons will help them become more rounded drivers, which in turn could result in fewer accidents and therefore cheaper car insurance.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motoring, pupils have a better chance of passing their driving test if they have had extra tuition from parents, who should sit, observe and then advise their offspring.

This allows them to see what it being taught by the instructor which parents can then add to, reinforcing the message they have learnt and theoretically, making them less likely to be involved in an accident, which will result in fewer insurance claims and as a result, reduced premiums.

Parents have been warned however that driving lessons with a qualified instructor are still essential in order to produce efficient and safe drivers, and that their own technique may not be suitable for their children.

The government recently announced modifications to the driving test, making it into a four-part examination in order to combat the number of road accidents involving inexperienced motorists.
