London drivers are "worryingly unsafe"

London drivers are
Drivers in London could be more likely to have a crash, which may affect their car insurance premiums, after a new study found that one in three failed a vision test.

Recent research by Specsavers during the Drive Safe Roadshow found that a third of the 500 people tested failed to meet the standard required by the department of transport and police force.

The survey also found that 89 per cent would consider regular eyesight checks if it reduced their car insurance premiums.

Dame Mary Perkins, the founder of Specsavers, said the results were cause for concern.

"It has long been suspected that defective eyesight is a significant contributory factor in road traffic accidents. These results show that a significant number of London's drivers are worryingly unsafe," she said.

If Dame Perkins' views are correct then it could have an effect on car insurance, as more crashes could lead to providers charging more.

Volvo recently won an award for its City Safety technology which automatically applies the brakes on a vehicle should a driver fail to act in certain dangerous situations.
