How environmentally-friendly a car is has little bearing on how much it will cost to insure, motorists have been told.

The technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, Graeme Trudgill, has said that 'green-ness' was not a major factor when insurers decide how much car insurance will be.

Mr Trudgill advised those who were looking to make a saving on their cover to look at the group that the vehicle is in if they wish to save financially.

"How green they are isn't a major factor. If you are worried about the price of insurance you should look at the grouping on the car and not how green it is," he said.

Smaller cars, which give out less pollution, are cheaper to insure he said but that the financial gain of insuring a green vehicle would not be that great.

The sales of eco-friendly cars have increased by 15 per cent this year, according to HybridCars.com.
