Uninsured drivers a "massive problem"

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said that a new agency is being created that will aim to penalise those breaking the law in a bid to eradicate the problem.
He said that the new measures will see registered cars compared with uninsured drivers which could help reduce the £30 levy being paid by law-abiding motorists for the victims of those who do not have cover.
"Two million people currently drive without insurance and it's a massive problem. It will compare the vehicle registration database with the motor insurance database. There's a big drive coming next year to stop uninsured drivers," Mr Trudgill stated.
Motorists penalised under the new scheme will receive a penalty notice and should they fail to get insurance after that then their vehicle will be seized.
A report by the Motor Insurers' Bureau in September last year revealed that uninsured drivers were ten times more likely to have a drink-driving conviction than those with cover.
