Vision Zero could make crashes a thing of the past
Volvo is aiming to launch a car that is virtually crash proof by 2020, in a move which could have an effect on car insurance.

The Swedish automotive company is looking at developing technology that prevents crashes from happening through a series of technological measures, according to the Sunday Times.

Features such as GPS tracking, radars and sensors, strong lightweight materials and "intelligent airbags" could act as a "giant electronic bumper" gathering information of any potential dangers and feeding it back to the vehicle.

Jan Ivarsson, head of Volvo's safety research team, told the newspaper that current attitudes to deaths caused on the road could change in the future and that the new technology could prevent tragedies from happening.

"Think of it like an autopilot system in an aircraft. We still want the driver in the loop, but there will be times when the car is in control," he said.

Professors at Stanford University in the United States are currently working on technology aimed at monitoring drivers' behaviour while at the wheel.
