Britain faces more floods
Published: 07/05/2008

A report from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has described the country as having a poor infrastructure in place for dealing with problems of excess water.
It went on to add that there was "a total lack of awareness" about the vulnerability faced by many parts of the country.
Michael Jack, the committee chairman, believes the government is walking a tightrope if it does not act to prevent a repeat of last year's problems.
"The public will not forgive the government if it is not seen to be responding to the lessons learnt from the floods of last summer. Our report has shown how confused and chaotic was the infrastructure when it came to preventing and dealing with surface water flooding," he said.
Last years more than 44,600 houses and 7,100 businesses were flooded.
The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee was nominated in 2005 and comprises 14 members.
