Homeowners may invalidate cover

Homeowners may invalidate cover
Homeowners who are renovating or improving their properties may invalidate their home insurance cover by giving workmen a key to the premises, an industry expert has warned.

Debra Williams, managing director of comparison site Confused.com, said that while such a move would make things more convenient, it could jeopardise the insurance cover should there be a theft.

She also claimed that anything minor such as changing a lock could make the policy invalid if it is not of the same kind that is specified in the agreement.

"Homeowners must ensure that when making alterations to a property, security doesn't decrease. Giving workmen a key to your property might seem convenient but this puts you at risk from once again having your home insurance invalidated, should theft occur," she said.

Policy holders are advised to consult with their provider to fully understand what the conditions of their cover are.

Confused.com is a price comparison site that allows consumers to compare quotes on car, home and travel insurance.
