Older drivers are safer drivers

Older drivers are safer drivers
A recent survey has found that older drivers are the cause of fewer accidents, which could impact on the cost of car insurance.

The Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) has found that motorists over the age of 70 pose no more of a danger on the road than those in their middle-age, while they were found to be considerably safer than drivers under 30.

Over 70s were found to be responsible for six per cent of pedestrian deaths, compared to male drivers under 30, who were responsible for 30 per cent of deaths, the IAM Motoring Fact Sheet 2008 showed.

The institute's Trust director, Neil Gregg, believes people's preconceptions about elderly motorists must now be dispelled.

"All too often older drivers are criticised for poor driving standards and for being a danger on our roads. Older drivers have a wealth of motoring experience and knowledge and the vast majority self-regulate the extent of driving in relation to their ability," he said.

The research also revealed that the number of adults in possession of a driving licence has risen to 72 per cent from 57 per cent.

The IAM aims to develop motoring skills to an advanced level to make driving a safer and more rewarding experience.
