Consumers are being urged to consider the importance of house insurance in spite of the costs.

Debra Williams, managing director at price comparison site Confused.com, admits that while home insurance may be expensive, it is worth it.

She also revealed that a scheme is being launched aimed at raising awareness of home cover and its benefits.

"The cost of insurance may seem expensive to low income households but protecting your home and its contents should be an important consideration," she stated.

Ms Williams also revealed that more people are getting cover for their homes by taking advantage of plans which allow the costs to be spread out and that more and more providers are making this option available.

A Treasury report, entitled 'Financial inclusion: an action plan for 2008-11', published last year, stated that the government will focus on home contents insurance for those living in rented accommodation.
