British motorists have been warned not to be "April fools" when it comes to renewing their car insurance premium.

Price comparison website GoCompare.com said that with many Brits doing a little belt-tightening at the moment, some could be tempted to provide false information.

However, the site's managing director, Hayley Parsons, warned that honesty was the best policy.

"Insurance represents a significant part of the cost of running a car these days, so everyone is looking for savings," Ms Parsons said.

"It might be tempting to alter certain details or omit key information if you think it'll help you get a better deal, but this could result in your policy being invalidated if you are found out.

"One of the best ways to save money on your insurance is not to just accept your renewal quote, the best company for you 12 months ago, may not be the best today," she added.

Providing false information to insurers is relatively common and people often admit to having done it in surveys.

However, insurers are getting increasingly tight on fraud and even the smallest falsehood could result in a claim being thrown out.
