Insurers step up pressure on personal injury

Insurers step up pressure on personal injury
Insurers have called on the government to push ahead with plans to reform personal injury claims.

Ministers launched a consultation in the spring of last year and are now coming under pressure to put their proposals into action.

The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) have said urgent action is needed to make the system quicker and fairer.

"There is a great deal of speculation about how ministers came to lose the momentum for reform they so manifestly had a year ago," said CII president Lord Hunt of Wirral.

"The ABI, CBI [Confederation of British Industry] and Citizens Advice said some sensible things today about the need for the government to get on with reforming the personal injury claims system. No one should underestimate the importance of this issue.

"It would be nothing short of a scandal if considerations that run contrary to the public's best interests effectively veto these much-needed and often-delayed reforms," he added.

Critics of the current system argue that it takes far too long to process claims and victims are often left waiting years for a pay-out, during which time they may be unable to work.
