Regulator continues commercial insurance probe
The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has extended its probe into the commercial insurance sector with the launch of a new discussion paper.

The paper will examine a number of issues thrown up by an FSA report published in December of last year looking at whether the disclosure of commission earned by commercial insurance intermediaries should be mandatory.

While the report stopped short of recommending such a move, it did raise some related topics for discussion.

"It is important that insurance buyers know what they're paying for when they use an intermediary," said Dan Waters, the regulator's director of retail policy and themes.

"We remain concerned that for some buyers of commercial insurance this is not the case.

"Our discussion paper offers some potential regulatory solutions, but the door also remains open for an industry-led response."

The discussion paper will look again at mandatory disclosure, as well as proposals for more rigorous enforcement of existing rules and a new regime to improve quality of commission disclosure.
