Mobiles 'still being used at the wheel'

Mobiles 'still being used at the wheel'
British motorists are still using their mobile phones while they drive, according to a price comparison website.

Confused.com said the recent newspaper pictures of celebrities using mobiles at the wheel were indicative of the attitude among many drivers.

Jeremy Clarkson, who presents Top Gear, was among a number of famous faces caught on camera breaking the law.

"These latest celeb' 'talk and drive' outings, based on our research, appear to reflect a general UK driver apathy towards this issue," said Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com.

"Despite harsher penalties and stronger police enforcement, some motorists are evidently continuing to use mobile phones while driving.

"Although many drivers feel that they can safely respond to a text message, or answer their phone, while staying in control of their vehicle, it is important to remember that no driver is infallible - taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, is ill-advised," she added.

In a survey earlier this year, Confused.com found that one-third of motorists admitted sending text messages while driving.
