Drivers warned of 'bottoming out' risk

Drivers warned of 'bottoming out' risk
Drivers have been warned of the dangers of ignoring a problem referred to in the industry as 'bottoming out'.

This is when the rear suspension of a vehicle has been damaged, often from towing.

It can result in ineffective breaking, loss of steering control and raised headlights that can cause problems for other road users.

Experts are warning that drivers are not only a safety risk but they could do more damage to their vehicles if they do not get them fixed.

"There are now do-it-yourself solutions available for motorists to help them avoid 'bottoming out' and prevent damage caused by speed bumps," said Mark Cornwall of the mail order specialist Car Parts Direct.

"Drivers can now reduce the risk of damaging their vehicle and keep the vehicle level when carrying heavy loads."

Failing to carry out quite basic repairs can lead to more serious problems or increase the likelihood of accidents.

As well as the risk of injury, this also makes a car insurance claim more likely, which will result in a higher premium the following year.
