It recommends that motorists should photograph the accident scene, take vehicle registration numbers and call their insurance company "immediately".
On a practical level, it advises drivers to take sun cream and plenty of water when driving somewhere hot because, if they do end up stranded at the side of the road after an accident or breakdown, then dehydration could be a real problem.
Ian Crowder, from the AA, said: "If in doubt call the police; if any injuries call an ambulance.
"You can use the Europe-wide emergency number 112 from mobile or land lines, anywhere in Europe, and it will take you to the local emergency service."
UK motorists who drive to Spain or Portugal are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than at home, according to the RAC Foundation.
