Majority of fire experts unsure of rules

That is the worrying conclusion reached in a study carried out by the Fire Industry Association, which showed that 78 per cent of safety professionals are unsure of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order introduced in October 2006.
Allister Smith, property risk manager for Norwich Union, said that fire professionals were expected to be more aware of the legislation than the average general business owner.
He added: "If the people who are often called upon to advise firms on fire safety regulations are not up to speed, what chance do businesses themselves have?
"Ironically, the order is not complicated; in fact much of it is about simplifying the rules on fire safety.
"I would urge safety professionals, and business owners alike, to make sure they have some understanding of what is required."
He concluded by saying protecting the lives of staff, as well as business property was "paramount", so everyone should work together to that end.
