Flood debate to enter another phase
Industry Insurance News - Published: 12/02/2008

Officials from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) are today scheduled to have a meeting with ministers to discuss the review of the statement of principles of flood insurance.
The review will assess the information and mapping currently available as well as ensuring a better understanding of the flood risk.
In addition, it is hoped that there will be a long-term strategy for flood risk management and steps to prevent new developments being built in areas more vulnerable to serious flooding.
The review will also address the interim conclusions from the Pitt Review on the availability and uptake of insurance.
Stephen Haddrill, director general of the ABI, told the Insurance Times magazine: "Insurers want to continue to provide flood cover as standard to as many customers as possible the statement can only continue if the government commits to addressing the lessons of last summer fully.
"That will require major new investment, especially in drainage."
The insurance industry is still reeling from compensation claims resulting from the summer floods estimated to be around the £3 billion mark.
