Honesty is definitely the right policy

Honesty is definitely the right policy
Being honest when filling in insurance documents is definitely the right policy, according to insurer Friends Provident (FP).

It would help matters, says FP, if policyholders actually read the small print of the contracts that they were entering into.

One in five does not read the terms and conditions before they sign up.

Hidden in most contracts are the all-important words about the non-disclosure of material facts being relevant in any potential future claim under the policy.

There does not appear to be any sympathy among honest applicants.

Research undertaken by FP shows that among people surveyed 54 per cent thought anyone not being honest should be refused any benefits when claiming under the contract.

Mark Jones, from Friends Provident, said most people recognised the importance of advice when buying insurance and they "took time to answer all questions truthfully when applying".

"The insurance business is here to provide peace of mind and is not just about collecting premiums and paying valid claims," he added.

It would appear to be in policyholders' interests, as they say, to come clean.
