Jody Ford, head of eBayMotors.co.uk, said the needs of the three million visitors to the site every month were "wide and varied" and she believed that insurancewide.com provided the correct service levels and choice to help satisfy the demand.
James Harrison, from insurancewide.com, said that eBay had been very successful in helping people buy and sell cars and that offering car insurance was just a natural progression.
He went on to say that his company would provide access to almost every UK insurer and broker and that it catered for every type of motor insurance requirement, including vintage or classic cars.
Mr Harrison added: "We already have a successful long-term partnerships with the major personal finance portals such as MSN, AOL and Yahoo and we now look forward to working with eBay to help drivers search for the most relevant, best value policy for their needs."
Insurancewide.com, an insurance comparison website, was launched in 1999.
A car is sold on eBay every two minutes and a motorbike or scooter every four.
