Online rates tumble

Online rates tumble
Online comprehensive car insurance rates have taken their first tumble in two years.

There was a 0.3 per cent fall in the average premium during October, November and December compared to the previous quarter, according to business consultancy Experian's Motor Insurance Benchmark.

After an initial rise in 2007, the final six months showed a levelling out in prices with the final three months recording a slight dip.

As a whole though the year recorded a 6.3 per cent increase in the average online price compared to 2006.

Avis Easteal, managing director of Experian's Insurance Services division, said that Broker prices had stayed low to compete with online prices but "this can only be sustained for so long".

"With the increased chance of road accidents at this time of the year coupled with the problem of uninsured drivers, the average premium will be affected as we move further into the New Year," she said.

The other fly in the ointment, she said, was that premium increases as a direct result of the summer floods were yet to feed through the system.
