Driving outside EU could be illegal

Driving outside EU could be illegal
Brits driving outside the EU who do not inform their insurers of their plans could be driving illegally.

Online insurer esure says that a UK insurance policy, which provides third party cover for damages to other people or vehicles, is effectively invalid outside the EU.

Adrian Webb, from esure, said that it you must let you insurer know if you intend to go outside the EU.

An extension and the cost involved would largely depend on where you were intending to go.

For example he said, if you were going to Baghdad then your insurer probably would not cover you.

"The silliest thing you could ever do when taking your car abroad is to not speak with your insurer," he added.

The British Insurance Brokers Association has issued some general tips for driving abroad, including having your car serviced before travelling, contacting insurers to make adequate cover is in place and making sure driving licences and insurance certificates are taken.

They also advise familiarising yourself with the motoring laws of the country you are going to by checking with the Foreign Office.
