Tyres key to winter driving

Tyres key to winter driving
Safe tyres are a vital consideration when planning to brave the winter roads, experts have warned.

With Christmas approaching, Britain has been hit by freezing temperatures as icy roads make driving conditions treacherous in places.

Insurers usually see a rise in claims this time of year as drivers struggle to adapt, but according to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), a few steps can help make winter driving much safer.

"Make sure your tyres are at the correct legal depth… that's very important," warned Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA.

"Take your little survival kit. If you have a mobile phone and you break down, then you can use that."

He added: "Take your insurance details with you and your breakdown details with you."

Last Christmas, breakdown recovery firm the AA attended 175,000 breakdowns.

This year, motoring organisations are bracing themselves for this Friday, which will be the big Christmas getaway.
