Climate change effect 'already being felt'
Industry Insurance News - Published: 27/11/2007
Communities around the world are already feeling the effects of climate change.
That is the view held by Friends of the Earth, which has compiled a report on how global warming is impacting on people.
Voices from Communities Affected by Climate Change includes testimonials from around the globe.
Small businessmen, farmers, agricultural workers and individual citizens have been canvassed in countries including Honduras, Peru, Brazil, Mali, Swaziland, Australia, Malaysia and Britain.
Tatiana Roa Avenda, director of Friends of the Earth Colombia, said communities were "already being hit" by climate change.
"Climate change is socially and environmentally disruptive, causing displacement, disease, and the destruction of livelihoods and ecosystems," she added.
Britain experienced the impact of climate change first hand earlier this year with devastating floods affecting large parts of the country.
Scientists have warned that similar 'freak' weather events could become more common in the future, prompting the insurance industry to lobby the government over flood defences.
