Caravans at Christmas for flood victims

Home Insurance News - Published: 27/11/2007
Some of the people hit by the floods earlier this year are facing the prospect of spending Christmas out of their homes.

Thousands of properties were damaged when high winds and heavy rain brought some of the worst floods Britain has seen in more than a century.

Insurers were hit with £3 billion in claims, but some homeowners have been critical about the time it has taken to deal with their cases.

Some have been out of their homes for four months and still do not know when they will be able to return.

In Tewkesbury, one of the worst-hit areas, around 200 families are expected to spend Christmas in temporary accommodation.

Chris Shaw, strategic director of operations at Tewkesbury council, admitted that some residents were facing a grim festive period.

"It's horrible people have to be in caravans at Christmas, we're doing all we can to help those affected," he told the BBC.

"We've set up a temporary launderette at Tewkesbury School. We're putting on events to get children out so they don't feel cramped in the caravans all of the time. We have to be there for people as far as we can."
