Home insurance market 'still ultra-competitive'
Home Insurance News - Published: 20/11/2007
Britain's home insurance market remains "ultra-competitive" despite the impact of this summer's floods.
Heavy rain and winds caused some of the worst flooding Britain has seen in more than half a century, with damage to businesses and homes costing the insurance industry more than £3 billion.
But according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) there are still good deals to be had.
Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at the BIBA, admitted that some insurers had raised premiums, but argued that the market in general remained one of the most competitive in the world.
"There was some talk about it [across the board rises in home insurance premiums] but home insurance is still ultra-competitive and you see during any advert break on TV, companies saying we will be your cheapest home insurance option," he said.
"It is still very competitive."
Insurers have warned that unless the government does more to protect Britain against future flooding, home insurance policies might no longer include cover for flood damage as standard.
