Car insurance fiddles being stamped on

Car Insurance News - Published: 19/11/2007
Car insurers are stamping down on the fiddle known as 'fronting'.

This scam is committed mainly by younger drivers who falsely name their parents as the main driver of their vehicle.

It can save them money on their premiums but insurers are coming up with better methods of uncovering this fraud.

Ever-improving methods of detection such as 'voice stress analysis' are being deployed which could trip up dishonest claimants.

It is not surprising, with the cost of car insurance being far cheaper for older drivers, that younger motorist chance their luck.

According to research by comparison website, Moneysupermarket.com, the cost of motor insurance for a 19-year-old with a 2005 Ford Focus and a one-year no-claims bonus is around £1,500.

With a parent as the named main driver and the youngster as an additional driver on the policy, the quote drops to around £1,000.

Speaking to The Independent, Moneysupermarket.com's Richard Mason said: "No insurers explicitly warn parents about fronting on proposal forms."

There are legal methods by which younger drivers can keep car insurance premiums down.

They include opting for smaller cars, avoiding speeding penalties and agreeing to higher excesses on policies.
