Men 'more likely' to be amber gamblers

Published: 05/11/2007
Men are more likely to run amber traffic lights than women, according to new research.

A study by the price comparison website confused.com revealed that male drivers are two-and-a-half times more likely to speed up when traffic lights turn amber.

The research comes 80 years since traffic lights were first introduced on British roads.

According to Debra Williams of confused.com, so-called 'amber gamblers' could see their insurance premiums rise.

"Many insurers see a distinct link between drivers jumping the lights and the increased likelihood of claims and accidents," she said.

"However, not all insurers penalise drivers in the same way."

Drivers caught jumping traffic lights can receive a fine and penalty points on their licence under code TS10.ADNFCR-1058-ID-18342436-ADNFCR
