Car insurance industry in 'fronters' crackdown
Car Insurance News - Published: 22/10/2007
The UK's car insurance industry if cracking down on the issue of 'fronting' - where young drivers tell them that their parent is the main driver of their vehicle so that they pay less for their premium.
This is according to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).
Males under the age of 25 typically pay far more for their car insurance than others in different age categories, with recent AA figures showing that premiums for younger people can be over three times higher than the average.
"This is a question of the evidence, so if you are the parent and you have said you are the main driver and the car has been in an accident, or stolen, at your son or daughter's university, you have got a lot of work to do to explain how that has come about," lead insurance Ombudsman Peter Hinchcliffe said, as he explained how fronters are usually caught out.
Adrian Webb a spokesman for a UK insurance firm, told the BBC: "The truth is, any act of deception to try to get a lower insurance premium with your insurance company is tantamount to fraud."
The FOS currently deals with between 100 and 200 fronting cases per year.
