Careless drivers 'inviting' crime
Car Insurance News - Published: 17/10/2007
Cheshire Constabulary has accused careless drivers in Crewe of inviting thieves to come and plunder their cars - by leaving their navigation systems in full view overnight.
The Constabulary says that leaving your satnav equipment on your windscreen amounts to an "open invitation" to burglars and thieves.
"Satnavs are the main target for thieves who specialise in car crime. Above everything else, they are the item they are looking out for," Sergeant Adam Butt, from the Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Unit Investigation Team said.
"Ten were taken in Crewe during September. They were nearly all from cars which had been parked up for the night on the drive or in the road outside the owners' homes," he continued.
"These thieves are opportunists and leaving a satnav attached to the windscreen or dashboard is almost the same as putting it into their hands."
Sergeant Butt reassured car insurance customers by revealing that the force was putting great effort into trying to catch these satnav thieves - although he added such thefts are "preventable, and that is a far better solution".
