Genetic test moratorium should be extended

Industry Insurance News - Published: 11/10/2007
The moratorium on insurance companies using results from genetic tests to calculate premiums should be extended, a leading industry body has claimed.

Jonathan French, of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), says that the ban, which will be reviewed in 2011, protects those seeking a genetic test for health reasons from possible repercussions from their insurer.

These results would primarily be used for calculating life and health insurance premiums - but could also affect car and motor insurance levies.

"The current moratorium is in existence until 2011," Mr French, assistant director of media relations for the ABI, commented.

"There is a review process which happens three years prior to the end of the period, so the review will actually take place next year. I wouldn't want to pre-empt the outcome of that review, but from the insurance industry's perspective the outcome that we want is that the moratorium will be extended."
