Repairmen 'putting lives at risk'
Car Insurance News - Published: 24/09/2007
Vehicle repairmen are continually putting motorists' lives at risk by doing a shoddy job on their vehicles, it has been claimed.
Investigators from Trading Standards found that 50 per cent of drivers left repair shops with tyres below the national standard. The inspectors posed as ordinary consumers as they carried out their checks.
Tyres not repaired to the national standard are more likely to lose pressure which in turn could result in vehicle handling difficulties once they are out on the public highway.
"It is disappointing and worrying that some businesses carry out such substandard repairs and are therefore putting the lives of drivers and pedestrians at risk everyday," Bill Bilon, director of Trading Standards, commented.
"Having a 50 per cent failure rate is totally unacceptable and rings alarm bells. Consumers need to know that once they take a punctured tyre to a business to be repaired, it is to a standard where they can then drive on our roads in complete safety."
