Tougher penalties for speeding drivers

Car Insurance News - Published: 24/09/2007
Drivers who do not declare who was driving when their car is clocked for speeding will face tougher penalties in new legislation to be introduced by the government.

People who are stopped or fined for going over the speed limit and who do not state who was driving the vehicle will now have six points placed on their licence instead of three. Having an increased number of points makes it harder to get a competitive deal on your motor insurance.

The government says that a large number of drivers try to hide the identity of who was driving their car when they get caught speeding so that they can avoid bans. But the RAC foundation says that innocent parties might get caught out by the new fines.

"It's a provision that has been abused and that's really the reason behind upping the stakes in this way Sheila Rainger, of the RAC Foundation, told the BBC.

"Our concern is that it will cause hardship to that small number of motorists who genuinely do not know.

"You might say 'how on earth can you not know who is driving your car' but for a family car shared between four or five members of the one family it's quite possible you genuinely may not know."
