North-west is commuters' worst area
Car Insurance News - Published: 24/09/2007
The north-west of England is the worst region in the UK to commute to and from work in, a new report states.
A study from the RAC Foundation claims that people travelling home from work in this region face more hazards than drivers in any other part of Britain. Analysis of pollution levels, travel times and collision rates means that the north-west stretches far ahead of its nearest rivals, the east of England and London.
The least hazardous areas are the north-east, the East Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humberside.
Action is needed by individuals, employers and government to ensure that we get smarter about commuting," commented RAC Foundation executive director Edmund King.
"The sheer number of car commuters and the lack of alternative transport means that the car will remain the main way of getting to work for the foreseeable future."
Around 25 million people make the commute to work every day in the UK with an average journey distance of 8.4 miles and an average time of 54 minutes.
