Remote working now 'four times as popular'
Industry Insurance News - Published: 17/09/2007
Remote working is currently four times more popular than it was in 2004, a new report states.
A study from the Confederation of British Industry claims that close to half of employers give staff the chance to work either from home or on the move - compared to just 11 per cent who did the same thing three years ago.
This change has come about as a result of advances in mobile technology and employers' frustrations over the inadequacy of the transport network, the study states.
In related news, a new survey of US and Australian managers reveals that over 50 per cent believe that offering staff the chance to work remotely was a competitive necessity. Over 33 per cent of those surveyed have employees that work out of the office over 20 per cent of the time.
Those with no formal remote working practices installed identified employee motivation (26 per cent) cost of office space (15 per cent), rising petrol prices (14 per cent), and traffic or weather conditions (14 per cent) as the reasons why they might change their mind.
