Governement urged to look at rail

Published: 10/09/2007
The government should increase the amount it invests in the UK's rail system - to help reduce congestion in its road network.

The Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) says that there will be six million more cars on Britain's roads by 2031 - with the total load of traffic increasing by 30 per cent during this time period, according to the Guardian.

Road pricing plans should be followed through with, which would mean that the number of vehicles on British roads would decrease, the group says.

"A campaign for better transport should look to improve conditions for all transport users, rather than pretending that it is possible to plan for life without the car," Edmund King, executive director of the CBT, comments.

There were close to 33 million cars on the UK's roads in 2006, figures from the DVLA show.
