Yorkshire police launch insurance crackdown
Published: 04/09/2007
Police in Yorkshire have announced that the drivers who take to the road without insurance may well end up getting caught out.
The force has just set up a phone line in conjunction with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) which will allow officers to check up on vehicles they have stopped by the roadside so as to find out whether they are insured.
Last year, over 78,000 vehicles across the UK were seized by police after they were found not to be insured.
"When traffic police pull over a vehicle that does not appear on the Motor Insurance Database, there can be occasions where the driver claims to be insured," the MIB's chief executive Ashton West commented.
Drivers who take to the road are both "selfish" and "reckless", the MIB head added.
Analysts have claimed that UK car insurance premiums are set to rise, as companies cannot justify the unprofitably low premiums they currently charge indefinitely.
